Been on the road for three weeks and about to leave Etosha for the Caprivi strip. We've covered 5 000 km of varied terrain, with one constant being sand. It's either been coarse or fine, brown or white, but always our companion. Some of our group of travellers have done a remarkable job of keeping it at bay, however us open window enthusiasts have managed to create mini sand dunes in all of the "Bos Trok's" nooks and crannies, even on the instrument console.
Driving through the rugged regions of the Skeleton coast and the Kaokoland was spectacular, however the lure of wildlife, that always seems to draw us the strongest, meant that our time in Etosha was again special. The game viewing was good, as the rainfall in the region has been meagre in recent years, necessitating the game to visit the water holes. This gave us sightings of lion, cheetah, white rhino, elephant, all the general game and a python to round things off. We were also able to indulge our new found interest, the bird life.
Camping with the rooftop tent has turned out to be all we had hoped for. Initially the closing process seemed to be a drag on early morning getaways, however by now, practice has ensured that even the afternoon game drive after a G&T and a snooze can be accomplished with minimal effort. In fact, the additional freedom offered by camping has already prompted us to start discussing our future trips deeper into the African continent.
